Description

The photographer Pieter Hugo (*1976) grew up in South Africa, experiencing the official ending of apartheid in 1994, has a fine sensitivity to social dissonances. His artistic works focus on the subcultures of societies and on the gap between the ideal ans reality.
In the series Permanent Error, Hugo confronts the beholder with the dark side of modern technologies: thousands of tonnes of electronic waste from Europe, most of which is recycled in a legal grey area in countries like Ghana. On the scrapheap at Agbogbloshie, for example, usable materials such as copper, steel and aluminium are harvested by the inhabitants and sold cheaply. Poisonous smoke rises from the sulphurous fires in which the residues burn.
