THE RÖCHLING FAMILY
"The Röchlings and the Völklingen Ironworks" spans an historical arch from the founding days of the Völklingen Ironworks by the industrial patriarch Carl Röchling to the post-war period. The exhibition tells of the ground breaking innovations of the Völklingen Ironworks under the Röchlings, but also equally thematises a much darker side such as the use of forced labour during the two world wars.
At the same time “The Röchlings and the Völklingen Ironworks” draws a portrait of an industrial region which was continually separated and broken through by national borders. The ore in Lorraine, the coal on the Saar – created the starting point for the Völklingen Ironworks, which remained formative for the history of the Röchlings and the Völklingen Ironworks.
