Description

The graffiti legend Mick La Rock (street name: Mickey) from Groningen, who now lives in Amsterdam, is one of Europe’s earliest graffiti artists. It did not take long for her to collaborate on an equal footing with her great role models from the New York subway. Mick La Rock is also a sought-after curator for exhibitions on graffiti history. As an artist, on the other hand – which is typical of the Dutch scene – she is not wedded to the past; she is decidedly modernist-geometric with a particular architectural sensibility. Her sculptural installations – often in dialogic combination with elements of wall design – continue to reflect the writing style with its letterforms and contrasting lines outlining surfaces. Her second mobile to date, Hanging Installation with Turquoise Accents, is no exception. The strongly abstracted work, created especially for the Urban Art Biennale 2022, refers both to the letter construction of the sprayer’s name and to the industrial environment in which this art takes place – the Völklingen World Heritage Site.
