Description
As a muralist, WD, who comes from Bali, continues the long tradition of trompe l'oeil façade painting. His technique is comparable to that used by the Renaissance masters on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel: illusionistic depth, protuberances, overlaps, as well as apocryphal fantasy and architectural elements set the stage for the figurative protagonists—always in close interplay with the actual structures of the buildings painted upon. As a result, with WD, even unspectacular everyday architecture suddenly transmogrifies into a visual highlight, even if usually only from a specific perspective and, of course, on the photos of the works distributed online. Within his pictorial worlds, WD negotiates betwixt academic painting and urban art, merging influences spanning from the Renaissance to the graphic novel. The in-situ work Four (Burnt) Seasons by the "Athenian by choice," located in the former coking plant of the Völklingen Ironworks, denounces the ongoing profit-driven destruction of the environment and looks back upon the role that the burning of fossil fuels plays in global warming.
