Description
The Svalbard archipelago has an area of over 60,000 square kilometres but is used almost entirely for extracting mineral resources. In 2019 Johnny Haglund visited the only Norwegian coal mines and captured images of the work beneath the ground. At temperatures far below freezing, the operating company employs heavy machinery. In spite of high investment, coal extraction is becoming less profitable and the future of the mines is uncertain.
