The Völklingen Ironworks was classified by UNESCO as a World Cultural Heritage Site in 1994. Like no other monument, the Völklingen Ironworks symbolises Saarland and its identity and the development of the Saar-Lor-Lux region. The development of the Völklingen Ironworks to a European Centre for Art and Industrial Culture has been Saarland's most important cultural task.
For this reason a supporting company was founded the 7th July 1999. The name of the supporting company is
World Cultural Heritage Site at the Völklingen Ironworks
the European Centre for Art and Industrial Culture GmbH.
The company's registered office is in Völklingen.
The Central commercial register no. HRB 7 52111
The aims of the company include the conservation and development of the Völklingen Ironworks monument complex, the broad-based dissemination of industrial culture in the context of art and society and intensive public relations work in this area. They also include the scientific and artistic research and pedagogical and didactic reappraisal of industrial culture within the development of an expanded concept of art and culture, paying special heed to European points of reference and their effective presentation to the outside world.
These ends are served in particular by publications, exhibitions, performances in the theatre area and symposia. Alongside traditional methods of presentation, it is intended that new media be incorporated in the concept and new forms of dissemination developed.
The company is a non-profit-making organisation. It does not give priority to the pursuit of its own financial interests within the meaning of the German Fiscal Code. (Excerpt from the articles of partnership)
